MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) a program designed for mothers with children from infancy through kindergarten, to meet at the North East Assembly of God Church.

If you are a mom with a child in kindergarten or younger, we have a place for you!

When: MOPS meetings are on the second Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.; and the fourth Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 from September through May.

Together, women will share food, listen to a speaker, enjoy a creative activity, and be strengthened by the friendships and experiences of other women.

Local author Ken Springirth will present “Make Way for the Trolley,” a presentation on the history of public transportation in Erie, on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Mercyhurst North East’s Alex Theater, 16 West Division Street, North East. Springirth has published six books on railroads and trolleys, and his seventh book, “Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad,” will be released in February of 2009. John Adams conducts Doctor Atomic Symphony, On the Transmigration of Souls, and selections from Nixon in China with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh

John Adams, perhaps the most well-known and most frequently-performed of American living composers, is the Composer of the Year for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s 2008-2009 season. Throughout the season, selections from Adams’ orchestral repertoire are scheduled in four BNY Mellon Grand Classics programs. The centerpiece of the season are these two special programs in January, featuring several of Adams’ large-scale works that were inspired by 20th-century historic events, which the composer will conduct (see also the performance on January 17)

These performances mark the first time that some of Adams’ music has ever been performed in Pittsburgh. The focal point of these concerts is the Doctor Atomic Symphony—music from Adams’ most recent opera about the scientists, particularly Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, who were involved with the historic Manhattan Project. This newly-crafted symphony takes musical threads from the opera’s score and combines them into a symphonic form performed without vocalists.

Local production of foods makes more sense than ever. The Penn State Cooperative Extension in collaboration with CEED of Allegheny College will present the Income Opportunities in Agriculture Conference on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. The conference will include speakers and exhibitors from Northwestern Pennsylvania. Whether you have thought about farming or want to add to the value of your existing farm, this program is for you! Penn State Cooperative Extension agriculture business educators and local professionals will present topics covering developing an agriculture business plan, financing agricultural enterprises and developing a market. Afternoon sessions will be presented by area farmers and ag-related business professionals who are succeeding in their businesses. They will share the development of their business, the challenges and success stories. The Vegetable session includes tracks covering sustainable vegetable production and shared kitchens. The Livestock and Agritourism track includes pork farming, wool production, and Beds and Breakfasts. Our Innovative Business Tract includes microbrewery, growing energy crops and biofuel production. This event will reach out to nonprofit organizations in Erie and Crawford with the goal of providing necessary items to these organizations, such as toiletries, clothing, and office supplies. Eighty nonprofit organizations from Erie and Crawford County submitted a list of supplies that they are in need of. These supply lists will be handed out to patrons as they enter the Wal-Mart store asking them to purchase and donate items on the list. The AmeriCorps VISTA Children&Youth Project of NW PA hosts the event to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.&works alongside volunteers to collect donations&“stuff the bus”.
